BENDIGO VRI BOWLS CLUB Annual 2021

Covid has continued to impact us all, resulting in a reduced pennant season with changed conditions. The removal of the afternoon tea break has meant we have lost revenue from the raffle run at home games but was perhaps negated by the fact that expenses were saved in providing afternoon tea. However not having the social interaction with the opposition at afternoon tea was missed by many and took away a lot of the pleasantries of playing bowls. We are fortunate that since my report at the AGM last August, none of our members have been affected by the virus. I hope this may continue.

We had 3 pennant sides entered for the 2020/21 season; unfortunately, the Midweek team struggled with our bare minimum of ladies. I thank these 6 girls for being available week after week to allow the team to take to the green. I also thank the boys who rotated in and out of the team to make up the side each week. Unfortunately the Midweek team finished at the bottom of the ladder and have been relegated to Division 4 for the coming season. It is hoped that they may be more competitive at this level and can soon return to a higher grade. Division 9 finished somewhere around the middle of the ladder. It is anticipated that with a more settled team in the coming season better results will be seen. They did a great job under difficult circumstances with necessity forcing the Selection Committee to change the teams around during this last season. Division 7 surprised everybody by beating all odds to play off in the Grand Final. This fairly settled side went down to a much stronger team by only 10 shots. A great effort contested on a not very level playing field.

Further improvements have been made around the Club, the most significant being the installation of air conditioning – which has made the atmosphere inside the clubrooms much more comfortable. The efforts put in by our members to maintain the Club facilities – both inside and out cannot be underestimated. I thank you all for the many hours you give to the Club to make it a good place to be.

Premier District Centre Award 2019 - Bendigo VRI Bowls

The VRI Board of management is pleased to announce that the Bendigo VRI Bowls club has been awarded the Premier District Centre of the year award, for the continued support to players of all abilities.

In 2019 the VRI Board has recognised the outstanding contribution the club has made through its interaction with various community groups. The club provides lawn bowls games and activities to the local primary school and other local clubs and organisations. In particular it provides people with disabilities the opportunity to take part in a friendly stress-free sporting activity. Currently the club assists over 40 people, who have either an acquired brain injury or with a learning disability to enjoy the game of lawn bowls. The bowls club itself has two members who are deaf and one blind member, all of whom play at a competitive pennant level.

While the bowling greens sees much of the activity, the club room is also extensively used by local groups including the Bendigo Artist Group and Latrobe University, who provide cooking classes for individuals with learning disabilities.

The VRI Board acknowledges the fantastic services the club provides to both it’s VRI members and the local community groups and is proud to acknowledge this through the Premier Centre Award.
